Locality and farm map

Wildebeestpan is situated near Sentrum (approximately 2h45min from Pretoria), within the north-western part of the Limpopo Province, some 60km north-west of Thabazimbi. Covering an area of approximately 1 200ha (3000 acres), this pristine hunting area is in the heart of the bushveld.

The farm is situated between the three major rivers in the bushveld, being the Crocodile, Matlabas and the Limpopo. Good underground water is available and the area is known for its huge Marula and Knob Thorn trees.

Climate

The area is classified as a dry zone, with an average rainfall of some 550mm per year. Average day temperature during the winter hunting season is 15 degrees celsius with cold mornings and nights. The rainy season encompasses the hot summer months between October and April. It is estimated that frost occurs on average 15 days per year.

Vegetation and diversity

Wildebeestpan can be described as sweet bushveld with large trees including Marula, Camel thorn, Knob thorn, Monkey Thorn, Leadwood, Shepherds Tree, “Dikbas” and Transvaal Katjiepiering. The veld is relatively open with enough natural cover to facilitate easy walking and stalking. No internal fences exist and no cattle are kept on Wildebeestpan.

The farm is located within the ‘Western Sandy Bushveld’, previously known as the Mixed Bushveld, and is 1 216 ha in size, with the topography of the farm relatively flat.

The vegetation of the area differs slightly, with 4 (four) basic vegetation communities identified, including the ‘Combretum apiculatum, Pterocarpas rotundifolius & Sclerocarya birrea woodland’, ‘Senegalia nigrescens & Senegalia erubescens thorn veld’, Senegalia nigrescens, Grewia flava & Senegalia erubescens thorn veld on red soils’, and ‘Senegalia erubescens & Boscia albitrunca clay veld on granophire’, on relatively a flat landscape, soil ranging from deeper sandy to shallow, clayey soils.

The farm has a tree density ranging between 745 and 1 520 trees per hectare. There are 7 semi-permanent pans on the farm, spread across the farm, not taking into account further pans widespread on the farm during the rainy season, as well as 5 (five) boreholes.

Water points

Wildebeestpan is known for its abundance of natural water pans, some of which are more than 300 meters in diameter. These pans naturally gather water in the rainy season, while being supplemented in winter by solar-powered boreholes. Very few man-made water points are therefore needed. These pans are the best spots for game watching and bird spotting at dawn and dusk.

Animal species

Animals occurring include Giraffe, Red Hartebeest, Eland, Nyala, Sable, Kudu, Impala, Blouwildebees, Gemsbok, Waterbuck, Zebra, Bushbuck, Tsessebe, Warthog, Steenbok, and Common Duiker.

A number of natural predators, including occasional leopard and cheetah, can be found on the farm. Resident species include Brown Hyena, Caracal, Jackal, Aardwolf, Aardvark, Bat-earned foxes, Honey Badgers and a number of smaller nocturnal cats.

Game numbers are monitored annually by helicopter. A scientifically sound utilization program is determined accordingly, with the aid of ecological consultants. This includes hunting during the winter months as well as capture when necessary.

A dedicated shooting range facility with a bench for sighting rifles is available.
